Holy Guacamole! Who’s Ready for National Guacamole Day?

No, it’s not a joke. Yes, it’s a nationally celebrated holiday. September 16th marks the celebration of the symphonic composure of creamy avocados mashed with a variety of chilies, cilantro and lime juice, among many other things.  So grab a few perfectly ripened avocados and let’s get mashing…

Guacamole: The Dip of All Trades

Probably one of the many reasons guacamole is a favorite all over the world is because of its versatility. Depending on what you like, guacamole can be made many different ways. No one can you tell you what to put in your signature guacamole dip. The only necessary ingredients are a few ripe avocados.

The Classic Approach

We can all appreciate a classic. The traditional recipe screams flavor and is the reason this dip became popular dating all the way back to the Aztecs. If we’re staying true to tradition, you’ll begin any guacamole recipe by mashing your avocados with a molcajete, a lava stone mortar and pestle found in Latin markets and specialty cookware stores. But don’t worry, if your avocados are ripe they’ll mash just fine using common kitchen utensils.

You can’t go wrong with a traditional version of this celebrated dish.

Fresh & Classic Guacamole:

  • 3 hass avocadoes, halved, seeded & peeled
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne
  • ½ medium onion, diced
  • 2 Roma tomatoes, seeded & diced
  • 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro
  • 1 clove garlic, minced

In a large bowl combine the avocado halves and lime juice, toss to coat. You can drain the lime juice and save for later. Using spoons, potato masher or pestle from your molcajete, add salt, cumin, cayenne and mash. Then, fold in the onions, tomatoes, cilantro and garlic. Add 1 tablespoon of the reserved lime juice. And enjoy!

Guacamole is a great dish to make but why not getaway to it’s native country and let someone else do the cooking. Royal Hideaway Playacar is a secluded, top-of-the-line resort in Riviera Maya that’s known for its guacamole, among many other signature dishes.
